Fashion Plate: Liam Coleman

Local Topman menswear buyer Liam Coleman tells Viva about his style dresser.
As the manager and buyer for Topman at The Department Store in Auckland, Liam Coleman unsurprisingly counts the brand as a favourite. "Being part of their New Zealand presence has been a natural journey for me," explains Coleman, who also looks up to mulberry bag designer Tom Ford - "I think he has always done great things when it comes to pushing boundaries and taking risks."

Coleman recently took over buying duties for Topman, having managed the store since it opened late last year. When it comes to the buying process, he explains it's similar to pulling together the perfect wardrobe for a friend. "We have a lot of very discerning customers and when I'm buying I think of our store as a complete but well-edited wardrobe for them - one that has a good selection of impeccably cut suits, some great casual looks, and some fun." His own wardrobe is relatively classic, with menswear essentials like trenchcoats, check shirts and crisp white shirts.

Who is the most stylish man you know, or wish you knew?
James Dean. You can have style or be "fashionable", but it's your charisma that will confirm your individuality among the crowd. His timeless clothing style and nonchalant attitude makes him the most stylish man I wish I knew.
Your favourite stylish place?
I would have to say the Port Hills in Christchurch. I used to go up there a lot when I lived there. I'm a real thinker so I need time out to gather my thoughts and get some perspective. Apart from the amazing view of the city and Banks Peninsula, the serenity there is priceless.

What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A Topman navy blue trench.

What item of clothing or accessory do you want to buy next?
Sunglasses. I'm waiting for Karen Walker's new eyewear range.

Who does the best shoes?
Every man should have a pair of brogues, and Tristan Blair does them brilliantly. Red Wings are great for the all-time classic workboot.

What's the one thing every man should have in his wardrobe?
A pressed, white shirt.

What's your cologne?
Comme des Garcons CDG2.

What do you wear at home?
Check shirts and cardigans. Check shirts are my achilles' heel.

What is your most cherished fashion item?
I would have to say a puffa jacket I stole from my dad. I used to raid my dad's wardrobe when I was a teenager scouting for "cool" clothes. Dad's had this jacket since he was in his late teens, I've seen pictures of him wearing mulberry handbag it mountain climbing - so it's a pretty special piece of clothing, especially since the sleeves are removable.

Describe the best outfit you've ever worn.
When I was 5 I used to wear a grey marl sweater with a print of Michael Jackson's Thriller album - I wish I still had it.

Do you carry a bag? What is it - and what's in it?
Yes, I use a Topman brown leather satchel. Inside is a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, a camera, water bottle, Berocca, Macbook, pens, muesli bars and bits of paper with reminders on them.

How would you describe your style?
Understated, thoughtful, confident.

How would your best friend describe your style?
Kurt Cobain meets the Dead Poets Society.
